Hi all, last Friday we collected our first retired greyhound, Merlin. We were hoping to bring Merlin and an older retired greyhound, Badger (Merlin's grandma adopted Badger on the same day), to the walk next sunday in Braintree.
Merlin is still a little unsure of men and hides behind us at times. So we may have to play Merlin by ear - still early days, however, we will be along with Badger, as she has lots more confidence.
Any tips for the walks and who to make ourselves known to would be great!!

Hi Jo you'll be made very welcome at the walk 
Sounds like Badger won't cause you any concerns but that perhaps Merlin will.
We have all sorts of personalities, both hound and human, at the walks and whilst you may think Merlin might struggle it would hopefully be the case that as he is back amongst his own he will be less nervy.
A lot of the dogs who are recently out of kennels come with a little baggage and for most of them this disappears as they gain their confidence. We always think you need to allow at least 6 months, or 9 months for nervous dogs, until you really start to see their characters. Some dogs will overcome their fears in that time, other will always be a bit nervy but without a shadow of a doubt these group walks help them.
When you arrive at the walk make a bee line for someone in a hi-viz vest and introduce yourself and explain about Merlin. They will make sure he's made to feel comfortable and not over fussed.
If it helps my own dog George was terrified of men and would pirouette, leap and hide. It's taken quite a while for him to overcome his worries and they're still not all gone, but he'll happily go up to anyone now, male or female to say hello.
There are quite a few people on here who can give you some tips for behaviour issues and at the walks there's a wealth of experiences to listen to.

I will be at this walk - I am tall, blonde  and slim'ish 
I will have the biggest black greyhound you will have ever seen - in a blue coat - and a cutsie black girlie in a pinkish coat.
I am always standing just to one side of the main group as my big boy likes a wee bit of space.
If you want to find me - we can chill at a nice distance and settle your boy.
You may be surprised - most greys snuggle themselves into the 'pack' and love it ;D
My boy shows no fear of other loose dogs when out on a GW - he is so chilled and relaxed ;D ;D ;D

were a friendly bunch here & always keen to meet new houndies & their owners as Janet has said, there are loads of people here with lots of experience with hounds & are always happy to help/make suggestion & give advice

Mo is very calming, you could walk her with Merlin if you feel it would help. She is very confident in a laid back kinda way which does seem to rub off.
Though my puppy is not so calm!!!
Just look out for a fat bloke with a gorgeous red Greyhound and a loony black, grey and white Greyhound puppy! ;D

Hello Jo, welcome to Greyhound Walks and the forum.
As Janet says, you can make yourself known to anyone in a hi-vis jacket at the walk as they are the walk co-ordinators. There's also a lot of regulars who attend the walks who will also be very friendly, like Paul (BlokeyBloke), Kris and Angela.
You can come and chat to me if you like. I've got red shoulder-length hair and will be wearing a white coat. I have a white and black greyhound called Lucy who will probably be wearing a purple coat next weekend at the walk. I also have a bouncy gobby over-friendly black and tan lurcher called Moss. You'll know him when you see him!
I think you'll find that nervous dogs come out of their shell a lot on the walks when surrounded by their own kind. It'll probably do your new boy the world of good.
